COMmoN QUESTIONS

How long do smoke alarms last before requiring replacement?

Smoke alarms are required to be replaced after 10 years of continuous service or upon a testing procedure failure.

The alarm’s ability to detect smoke effectively diminishes over time due to various factors such as age, dust accumulation, UV exposure and potential component failure.

How do I know if my existing smoke alarms are interconnected?

To check, simply press the “TEST” button on one of your smoke alarms or wall-mounted controller and listen out for all the installed alarms to sound simultaneously.

If all installed smoke alarms sound simultaneously, they are interconnected. If not, get in touch with our team today to ensure you’re protected adequately.

My smoke alarm has a 9v battery inside, is it compliant?

Since January 1, 2022, all smoke alarms within rental and sold properties must either be hardwired to an electrical sub-circuit with a backup battery or be powered by a standalone, non-removable, internal battery rated for 10 years of use along with a number of other requirements listed at the top of the page.

As of January 1, 2027, all owner-occupied properties in Queensland must also comply.

Note: Although AS 3786:2023 was introduced on 17 February 2023, compliance with AS 3786:2014 remains the current legal requirement until the National Construction Code (NCC) is updated to reference the updated standard.
