what is an rcd trip-time test?

An RCD trip-time test involves the following procedures:

  • Thorough visual inspection to check for loose terminations, signs of overheating and physical damage.
  • Simulation of an electrical fault on all installed safety switches using calibrated testing equipment.
  • Labelling of each tested safety switch indicating trip time result, tested date and re-test due date.
  • Documenting and reporting of all test results.

This test confirms each safety switch’s ability to trip quickly and effectively in the event of a legitimate fault to protect against life-threatening electric shock, fire and equipment damage. To comply with Australian Standard AS/NZS 3760, RCD trip-time testing must be carried out by a licensed electrician.

Note: Any competent person including homeowners, tenants or employees can conduct push-button testing of RCD’s to check basic functionality, this is recommended to be completed quarterly.

why are appliances tested and tagged?

Testing and tagging of appliances is required to verify they are safe for use within workplaces, rental properties and high-risk environments.

This process helps identify damaged or faulty equipment that could potentially lead to electric shock, fire or failure.

It is a legal requirement in many settings and helps businesses and property owners comply with Workplace Health & Safety (WHS) regulations.

Regular testing also provides documented proof of compliance, supports insurance obligations and ensures peace of mind that all portable electrical appliances have been inspected and confirmed as safe.

common questions

How often should RCD trip-time testing be completed?

Under AS/NZS 3760, RCD trip-time testing is generally recommended to be completed annually.

Note: The required testing frequency can vary depending on the type of RCD’s used (fixed or portable) and the environment in which they operate.

Will I lose electrical supply to outlets during RCD testing?

During RCD testing there will be a temporary interruption to the electrical supply of any outlets or fittings protected by the safety switch being tested.

Note: Planning ahead is essential if you rely on sensitive or critical equipment. To help minimise disruption, our team can schedule RCD testing outside of business hours or at a time that best suits your operations.
